The living areas along the valley of the Nidda on the outskirts of the social democratic city of Frankfurt were famous for their simple beauty and functionality. Talented, young architects designed them under the inspired leadership of the cityÕs head architect Ernst May.
Standardisation was one of the leading principles, out of an egalitarian idea: everyone would receive as much light and air as everyone else, and to reduce the costs and diminish the construction period. The building site looked like a giant factory where concrete wall elements complete with openings for doors and windows were put in place.
