The May brigade designed living areas like they did in Frankfurt: the cities consisted out of linearly organised similar, relatively autonomous quarters, repeated like a row of stamps. But different from Frankfurt was the lack of a historical centre, a boulevard to stroll along: there were no representational functions.
This led to heavy criticism. Mostakov even wrote an article under the heading "The worthless heritage of Ernst May". In 1933 May left the Soviet Union. He went to Africa, joking about lion hunts and coffee planting, but his mind was set on new architectural challenges.
During a presentation of the plans of Novo Kuznetsk a komsomolin said: "Of course, one couldnŐt think of anything better for the labourers of the capitalist Henry Ford. But if our workers build for themselves, what will their city look like?"
