In the late Middle Ages the city of Kuznetsk was founded in the Kuznetsky Basin in the middle of Siberia, an area where in spring you could pick up chunks of coal from the defrosted ground. It was a place of agriculture and trade, and a place to be banished to, as was the writer Dostoyevski.

The modern history of Kuznetsk started in 1927, when it was decided to build a huge factory of blast furnaces. Important architects as Shushev, the Vesnin brothers and Ernst May were invited to draw a city-plan.
