Leendert Cornelis van der Vlugt was associated with the Brinkman architect's firm after the death of Michiel Brinkman. From that moment Michiel's 23 year old son dealt with the organisational aspects of the firm and Van der Vlugt acted as senior architect. Van der Vlugt developed the design of the Van Nelle factories, but the influence of avant garde architect and employe Mart Stam on the design was considirable.
