Hans SchmidtÕs most important project was the planning of New Orsk, on the border of Kazakhstan. He worked on the project from 1932 until 1935. After 1936 it was prohibited for foreigners to work in the field of urban planning or construction. Schmidt got a new assignment: designing interiors of kitchens and shops.

He returned to Switzerland in 1936. In the train he mysteriously lost a suitcase full of documentation of his work in the USSR.

Hans Schmidt manuscript: "In the socialist city the workerÕs squares and houses will not only be built by themselves, but will also be their property. They will realise the best possible living conditions for themselves."
