The Swiss architect Hans Schmidt was a commited socialist and an important polemist of international modernism. Together with Mart Stam, Hannes Meyer and El Lissitzky he founded the 'ABC Beitrage zum Bauen'-magazine, which was one of the bridges between the Soviet constructivists and the functionalists of the West.
It was Stam who recommanded Hans Schmidt to
Ernst May, at the time the leader of an international brigade of architects
and urban designers at the Standardgor Project in Moscow. Schmidt was invited
to join in. He arrived in Moscow in september 1930.
