Orsk is a city founded in 1735, at first with a military and administrative function; later it became an important city along a caravane track. It lies on the left bank of the Yeshanka in the Southern Urals.

In 1932 it was decided to build a new city on the right bank of the river for the workers of the locomotive factory TETS and a nickel factory: Sotsgorod Orsk. It was designed by Hans Schmidt.
