Meyer's plans
to build on the high bank of the Bira were frustrated by the Red Army that was
stationed there for many years. Of Meyer's design for the left bank many buildings
are still situated on the planned location, but as a whole only the street from
the station to the Palace of Culture is recognisable.

The Jewish Autonomous Region was a debacle. In the late thirties the anti-Semite Stalin sent many of the Jewish ŽmigrŽÕs to the camps. Nowadays there is only a small but active Jewish community in Birobidzhan.
