Van der Vlugt's choice to employ Mart Stam had been a fair one. The firm of Brinkman and Van der Vlugt had a lot of work. Stam's working experience at several avant-garde architecture firms could help Van der Vlught to continue in the modern direction.

Although Van der Vlugt as the senior architect stayed in charge of the project, Mart Stam did much of the sketching for the Van Nelle Factories. Authors like Reyner Banham and Gerrit Oorthuys stress the important role Stam played in the actual design of the factories. Not everyone agrees: the subject is still as controversial as it was in 1928.
