Soon after their arrival, a delegation of the 'Brigada Maya' made a five-days journey by train across the Ural-mountains to their first location: the newly planned city of Magnitogorsk. The carriage was shunted into a sliding to function as their working base. After two weeks of sketching, debating and calculating, StamÕs design was chosen.

Stam settled himself with a small brigade in Magnitogorsk to guide the construction. Materials was scarce: all steel and concrete was reserved for industry. Many of the unskilled workers slept at the building site, between tools and machines.
