Magnitogorsk is a linear city on the East-West axis, perpendicular to the industry. Every apartment receives light from the East in the morning and from the West in the afternoon. The design is based on the Siedlung Goldstein by Schwagenscheidt, an unrealised rigid strip-development plan for a quarter for 10.000 people in Frankfurt, with itÕs communal buildings on the edges of the plan.

The city was designed scientifically. Everything was calculated: the size of the standardised quarters, the amount of living space needed (6m2 a person), the amount of schools, hospitals, shops, canteens and laundrettes. MayÕs specialists designed all these standardised communal buildings in Moscow.
